CITY ROUNDUP Battles runs, passes Rayen to first victory of season



The Tigers defeated Margaretta 26-13.
CASTALIA -- Quarterback Sal Battles rushed for two touchdowns and passed for 135 yards Friday to lead The Rayen School football team to a 26-13 victory over Margaretta.
Battles gained 95 yards by rushing eight times and completed nine of 19 passes. He scored touchdowns on runs of 1 and 2 yards.
With the Tigers (1-2) leading 18-13, Stevie Slade intercepted Margaretta quarterback Kyle Jones in the fourth quarter and returned the ball 60 yards for a touchdown.
Dwayne Smith scored Rayen's first touchdown on a 4-yard run and gained 65 yards on 12 carries. Gary Thornton rushed for 78 yards on 11 tries.
For Margaretta (2-1), Jones hit Mark Hight with a 15-yard touchdown pass and Robert Shaffer scored from 5 yards out.
The Tigers limited Margaretta to 42 yards rushing and 145 passing.
Mooney 42,East Cleveland Shaw 14
CLEVELAND -- Nathan Burney rushed for 220 yards on 22 carries and scored on runs of 12 and 4 yards as the Cardinals routed East Cleveland Shaw.
Mooney, behind 7-0 after the first quarter, bounced back to score twice in the second period.
Ryan Joyce caught a 38-yard TD strike from Derrell Johnson and Michael Cylar tallied on a 2-yard run.
The reception by Joyce, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior, was the first touchdown of his career.
Quarterback Derrell Johnson rushed for 109 yards on nine carries and he was 7-of-7 passing for 115.
East Cleveland Shaw was limited to 32 rushing and 55 passing yards.
Western Reserve 62, Youngstown Christian 15
BERLIN CENTER -- The Blue Devils (1-2) scored points in every quarter against the Eagles (2-1).
Shawn Bryant rushed 19 times for 105 yards and he scored on a 2-yard run and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a TD.
Brandon Moheman connected on 11-of-19 passes for 205 yards and three TDs. He also gained 37 yards on six carries and scored on runs of 16 and 18 yards.
Quarterback Aaron Agresta connected on 13-of-24 passes for 108 yards, which included TD strikes to Aaron Tate for 2 yards and to Eddie Gonda for 6 yards.
