Chautauqua Institution official to speak on living with hope

YOUNGSTOWN -- First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., will sponsor a seminar and public lecture Sept. 27 with the Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell of Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y.
A seminar for clergy and church leaders is planned at 4 p.m. The topic will be "Are the Prophetic and the Pastoral Compatible?"
Reservations are not required but are requested for adequate seating. Dinner will be at 5:30 with the Rev. Dr. Campbell. The cost is $10 and includes a meat and meatless option. Reservations are due by Sept. 22 with check (payable to the church) sent to the Rev. Nick Mager, First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44503.
Dr. Campbell will present a lecture at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary on the topic "Living with Hope in a Pluralistic America."
The seminar and lecture are made possible through St. John's Episcopal Church and the Robert M. Hammond Memorial Endowment Fund of First Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Campbell, who was born in Youngstown, is the director of the department of religion at Chautauqua Institution, and the first woman to have that position at the institution's center for religion, arts, education and recreation.
She is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the American Baptist Church.
She was the first woman to be executive director of the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches and the first ordained woman to be general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ, USA. She is chairwoman of Global Peace Initiative of Women.
