Authorities find body of man in murky pond
NILES -- The body of a 19-year-old Weathersfield Township man missing since Labor Day was recovered Friday from a pond that was being pumped out.
Fire Capt. Gary Brown said the body of Travis Keirsey was discovered in the middle of a murky pond off Salt Springs Road near L.W. Foster Co.'s Niles plant about noon.
Police were alerted Tuesday by Keirsey's mother when her son didn't return home from fishing with friends at the pond. Brown said it was his understanding that Keirsey had gone into the water to retrieve his cell phone.
Police and firefighters searched the pond and the woods around it Tuesday and Wednesday when the search was called off. At that time, only his shoe was found in the water by divers.
Authorities decided to pump out the pond Thursday and the body was spotted after the water receded about five feet, Brown explained.
The captain said the body appeared not to have any trauma on it. The coroner's office was called.
Police had said the fishing excursion had turned into a "party" before Keirsey went missing.
