Poland stays unbeaten, turns back Canfield, 4-1



CANFIELD -- Steve Gavolas scored two goals as the Poland High boys soccer team defeated Canfield, 4-1, Thursday in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Chris Juchno had one goal and one assist to lead Poland (4-0). Matt Shurilla also scored for the Bulldogs while Dain Malaniak had an assist. Goalkeeper Caleb Markusic made 13 saves.
For Canfield, Kevin Ricks scored while goalkeeper Eric Clayton made 14 saves.
JVs: Canfield, 3-1.
Mooney 3, Warren JFK 0
WARREN -- Zach Hernan scored on two penalty kicks for Mooney (2-1-1, 1-0 Steel Valley Conference). Hector Hernandez added the other goal on an assist from Kevin Miller.
Goalkeeper Matt Kokrak made 13 saves for the Eagles (3-1-1, 0-1).
Girls
MECCA -- Carly Cicero, Kelly Leonard, Tyler Fridley and Jessica Pallante scored a goal apiece as Niles defeated Maplewood 4-3.
Shaina Cowell and Fridley each had an assist for the Red Dragons (5-1).
Tori Spencer scored two goals and Kristina Peterson one for the Rockets (3-2-2). Peterson and Spencer had an assist apiece.
Goaltender Gabby Belcastro had five saves for the Red Dragons. Leah Dean and Bonnee Clute combined for 23 saves for the Rockets.
Mooney 4, Beaver Local 0
STRUTHERS -- Freshman Katie Griswold scored two goals to pace the Cardinals (3-1-1). Kelli Willis and Marisa Simon added one apiece. Simon also had two assists. Goaltenders Natalie Humphreys and Veronica Skowron combined for the shutout. Beaver Local's Leah Miller had 16 saves.
Champion 2, Hubbard 1
CHAMPION -- Alyssa Boggess and Brittany Skeels scored for the Golden Flashes (3-2-1, 2-0 Trumbull Athletic Conference). Boggess also had an assist while goalkeeper Kelley Dillon made two saves.
For Hubbard (2-2, 1-1), Shannon Sarisky scored on a penalty kick.
