Patriots lead 23-14 after three
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes and Corey Dillon scored on an 8-yard run as the New England Patriots led the Oakland Raiders 23-14 after the third quarter of the NFL season opener Thursday night.
The game was not completed in time for this edition.
Randy Moss made a speedy impact on his new team when he caught a 73-yard touchdown pass that gave the Raiders a 14-10 lead with 8:52 left in the half. He had just one more catch through three quarters, giving him a total of three against the defending Super Bowl champions.
The Patriots were going for their 21st straight win at Gillette Stadium since losing there in their next-to-last game of the 2002 season.
Dillon had gained just 11 yards on 11 carries before his touchdown with 5:05 left in the third quarter. Adam Vinatieri's extra point was blocked by Langston Walker. The touchdown came three plays after Richard Seymour's pressure forced the ball to pop out of Kerry Collins' hand and into nose tackle Vince Wilfork's hands. It was his first interception in his two pro seasons.
Big gainers
Moss, obtained after spending seven seasons in Minnesota, and running back LaMont Jordan, a starter after four seasons as Curtis Martin's backup with the New York Jets, each had 29-yard receptions on the first possession of the season. That ended in Collins' 2-yard scoring pass to Courtney Anderson.
But the Patriots' offense went right to work on the team that allowed the second most points in the league last season, scoring on Vinatieri's 26-yard field goal on their first possession.
They took their first lead 10-7 when Brady and Deion Branch, the MVPs of their three Super Bowl victories, connected for an 18-yard touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Branch, who didn't play in the exhibition games despite being healthy, caught three passes for 57 yards on the drive.
On the first play after Josh Miller punted for the Patriots, the 6-foot-4 Moss, obtained after seven seasons with Minnesota, caught Collins' pass behind 5-foot-8 Tyrone Poole down the left side. Moss bobbled the ball, hung on, then cut inside, where he eluded safety Rodney Harrison for a touchdown that made it 14-10.
