Some schools have only minor damage

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Some New Orleans schools that sustained only minor damage from Hurricane Katrina might reopen as early as January, the president of one of the city's school boards said Wednesday.
About 20 schools in the West Bank and Uptown areas of New Orleans sustained limited damage, so officials are hopeful that those buildings could reopen in January, said the Rev. Torin Sanders, president of the Orleans Parish School Board.
Sanders spoke from Charleston, where he evacuated to his parents' home after fleeing from New Orleans before the hurricane struck.
The district has more than 60,000 students and almost 8,000 employees.
Some schools may be closed for more a year or more, Sanders said.
