'Meet Me in St. Louis' to be shown on big screen on Central Square
This is the first in a number of classic movies planned for downtown.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The big screen is returning to downtown Youngstown next week.
A free screening of the 1944 movie classic "Meet Me in St. Louis" is set for 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15.
The MGM musical, starring Judy Garland, will be shown on a 15-foot-by-20-foot screen on the exterior east wall of the 17-story First National Tower on the city's downtown Central Square on Wick Avenue. Limited seating on the sidewalk for the event is available.
"It's a good way to bring people to downtown at night during the week to see what we have to offer, and to provide a family activity," said Claire Maluso, the city's Federal Plaza director.
Set in 1903, "Meet Me in St. Louis" is about the Smith family who live in St. Louis, where the World's Fair is taking place. In the movie, the father is offered a job in New York, and the family is shaken by the prospect of moving, according to Amazon.com.
Others planned
This is the first in a number of classic movies planned to be shown on the large screen downtown, Maluso said. Other movies include "The Wizard of Oz," "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Singin' in the Rain."
"We want to bring a little movie nostalgia back to the city," Maluso said.
There are no family-oriented movie theaters in Youngstown. Among the first theaters opened by the Warner Brothers was one located on West Federal Street in Youngstown at what is now Edward W. Powers Auditorium. That theater opened in May 1931.
The event is sponsored by the city's Federal Plaza office, Youngstown CityScape, Youngstown Arts and Entertainment District and Town One Streetscapes Inc. of Poland.
