B.J. Alan Co. is sponsoring five drop-off locations for donations of canned food in No. 10 cans, baby formula, diapers and baby products, personal hygiene and first aid products, pet food, paper products, bottled water and bottled juice in plastic bottles, boxed food and other nonperishable food such as peanut butter, toaster pastries, cereal and nutrition bars. Items may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday at Youngstown State University Kilcawley Center, One University Plaza; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday at The Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road, Boardman; Bob & amp; Chuck Eddy's, 4850 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown; The Village Plaza, U.S. Route 422 and state Route 46, Warren; and in the Sparkle Market parking lot at 14895 South Ave., Columbiana, between Routes 46 and 164.
The Mahoning County Salvation Army sent its mobile canteen and a three-person crew to Jackson Miss., Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters for Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Divisional leaders sent the canteen and crew to Bogalusa, La., just north of New Orleans on the Mississippi border. Crews will change every nine days and the canteen will be restocked with truckloads of Mahoning Valley donations.
Greenford Christian Church has a connection with Journey Christian Church in New Orleans and will take donated items there.
The Columbiana Ministerial Committee will collect funds during the Columbiana Street Fair, which begins Thursday and ends Saturday. Pastors will walk in the annual parade soliciting funds, and there also will be buckets at several street fair locations. One bucket will be by the Church of the Nazarene booth.
Columbiana citizens will volunteer to collect items at the Sparkle parking lot today and continue as long as people donate items. There is one tractor-trailer to fill and a second is available if needed. Besides food, bottled water and other supplies suggested, the group requests donation of new underwear, linens, towels, pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, inflatable beds, manual can openers, school supplies and insect repellent. Also suggested is an individual disaster bag of items in a 2-gallon closure plastic bag: one 12- to 18-ounce bottle of shampoo; two bars of soap, bath size or larger; one medium tube of toothpaste; three toothbrushes; one hair comb; two hand towels; four pocket-sized packages of facial tissues; one box of plastic bandages; one deodorant stick; one fingernail clipper; one small stuffed toy.
Donations of diapers, baby formula, baby food and Pedialyte can be dropped off Sept. 12 at the Bazetta Township Hall police department or any fire station. Questions, (330) 637-2369.The First Church of God, 426 West Broad St., Newton Falls, will accept nonperishable items at the church's family activity center from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sept. 16. Checks can be made out to Church of God Compassion Fund. Acura of Boardman at 883 Boardman-Canfield Road is a drop-off site for items. Jerry Sanford, owner of the business, also will donate $100 to relief efforts for each vehicle sold Sept. 10 to 17.
UHENN, a Lordstown manufacturer and direct sales marketer of handmade baskets, pottery, wrought iron and candles, has made a $25,000 corporate donation and designated its HENN Legacy of Giving project this month for relief efforts. The company will donate $5 from each sale of a special edition "Promise to Share" basket to American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The baskets will be available beginning Friday and are on display at the company's store at 8292 Tod Ave., S.W.

Brian Corbin, executive director of Catholic Charities Services and health affairs and disaster coordinator in the Diocese of Youngstown, said that $19,106 had been collected as of Sept. 6 to aid relief efforts.
Corbin said monetary donations are crucial at this time because cash "follows the needs of the people" and those needs change as more assistance arrives and their situation evolves. In another area, Corbin said Catholic Charities USA, the official U.S. Catholic Bishops Domestic Disaster Coordinator, is working with local agencies to compile a list for the national data base of people and places willing to house the homeless.
His office is taking calls from Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula, Portage and Stark counties. Contact Corbin or his assistant, Rick Walker, at (330) 744-8451 to offer shelter.
