SVC player of week
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robert Walker of Mooney High was named Steel Valley Conference player of the week.
Walker, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior defensive end, had seven tackles, including four for loss, a sack, and two passes defensed in the Cardinals' 21-14 victory at Buffalo St. Francis.
Basketball officials
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Basketball Officials Association will hold classes for individuals interested in becoming an official.

Flag football
The Youngstown 8-on-8 Flag Football League will hold a mandatory captains meeting Thursday at Jolly Joe's at 7 p.m.
The league will begin Sept. 11.

Vargas can't fight
CLEVELAND -- A scheduled four-round heavyweight fight between Devin Vargas and David Cleage was postponed when Vargas complained of chest pains.
Vargas is managed by Pat Nelson.
A heavyweight 12-rounder for the vacant USNBC heavyweight championship had Ray Austin (23-3-1, 15 KOs) win a split decision over Owen Beck (24-2, 18 KOs) in a very close fight.
In a controversial ending, Guillermo Jones (32-3-2, 25 KOs) won by a fourth round TKO over Wayne Braithwaite (21-2, 17 KOs) in a scheduled 12-rounder for the WBC Latino cruiserweight title.
In a 12-rounder for the WBC Continental Americas heavyweight championship, Donnell Holmes (23-0-1, 22 KOs) won by TKO at 2:25 of the eighth round over Stacy Frazier (14-4, 13 KOs).
A middleweight 12-rounder for the WBC International title between Randy Griffin and James Obede Toney ended in a draw, and in a light-heavyweight eliminator bout, Corey Cummings won by TKO at 2:46 of the final round over Tim Bowe.
In a featherweight eight rounder, former IBC bantamweight champion Tim Austin (26-1-1, 23 KOs), coming back to the ring after a 2 1/2 year layoff, won by TKO in round five over Reynaldo Antonio Hurtado.
Jimmy Villers of Youngstown was the referee for the Jones-Braithwaite fight, and Tom Miller and Phil Rogers were judges.
Gerba cited by PAC
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Gary Gerba, a junior strong safety for the Bethany College football team from Warren JFK High, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference defensive player of the week.
In Bethany's 34-21 win over Franklin & amp; Marshall last Saturday, Gerba had four tackles, three pass breakups, one interception, one quarterback sack and one forced fumble.

Steelers moves
PITTSBURGH -- Linebacker Andre Frazier and wide receiver Walter Young were among seven players cut last week by the Pittsburgh Steelers who returned to the team Monday on the practice squad.
Frazier, a rookie free agent from Cincinnati, and Young, who spent last season on the practice squad, were joined by guard Jim Jones, defensive end Shaun Nua, linebacker Dedrick Roper, defensive end Eric Taylor, fullback Zach Tuiasosopo and wide receiver Chris Samp.

Bonds works out
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Barry Bonds worked out with the San Francisco Giants Monday, taking batting practice and testing his throwing arm.
Bonds, recovering from three operations on his right knee since Jan. 31, said he didn't know when he would return to the lineup.
The 41-year-old slugger took 17 swings and hit five balls over the fence during his turn in the batting cage.
Browne winsat Boston
NORTON, Mass. -- Olin Browne closed with a 4-under 67 Monday to win the Deutsche Bank Classic.
Browne emerged from a five-way tie for the lead.
