Walk-a-thon to raise funds for cystic fibrosis

BOARDMAN -- The sixth annual "Great Strides" walk-a-thon to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Boardman Township Park.
A total of $35,000 was raised during last year's walk, exceeding the $32,000 goal. This year's goal is set at $40,000.
"Great Strides" is the foundation's fastest-growing fund-raiser, annually raising more than $22 million nationwide and more than $300,000 in northeast Ohio alone. Funds raised benefit medical research and programs.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting about 30,000 children and young adults. It causes the body to produce a thick, sticky mucus which clogs the lungs.
This abnormal mucus leads to chronic lung infection, life-threatening lung damage and also interferes with digestion.
Sponsorships are still available and donations can be sent to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 1980 Twin Oaks Drive, Girard 44420. For more information, contact Colleen Novosel at (330) 759-0913.
