FIFTY-FIVE YEARS AGO: An estimated 2,500 people jammed the area in front of the Canfield Fair grandstands to watch the bathing beauty contest on WFMJ's broadcasting platform. Sixty girls from Youngstown's six public pools competed and six winners were named: Clara Belfast, North Side Pool; Janie Olsavsky, Borts; Connie Lou Williams, South Side; Eileen Bott, Lincoln; Sylvia Wilson, John Chase, and Joanne Mushinsky, Shady Run. Visitors to this year's fair may notice that the style of dress is considerably more casual than it was in 1950, when men wore suits and ties and ladies wore dresses, hats and even gloves to the fairgrounds.
