Suspect seeks surgery to have bullet removed

YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who police say is a murder suspect is asking to be transferred from jail to a hospital so he can have surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his skull.
Ted Macejko Jr., lawyer for William Aponte, 43, of Liberty Road, asked Judge R. Scott Krichbaum in a motion filed Friday for the transfer. Macejko said his client has constant pain on the right side of his arm, face and eye and that there may be neurological damage.
Aponte is being held without bond at the Mahoning County jail. Police say Aponte is responsible in the June 29 shooting death of Deandre Edwards, 18, of Woodcrest Avenue. Trial is set for Nov. 2.
About 15 minutes after Edwards was shot, police found Aponte a few blocks away shot in the head and covered in blood. Macejko said in the motion that the wound was closed but the bullet was not removed.
Police say four armed East Side men accused of shooting at officers and eluding a six-hour dragnet in early July -- they later were captured -- likely were seeking to avenge Edwards' killing before police confronted them. One of the four men was the victim's brother.
