Scrappers drop 4th straight
The Scrappers have lost 11 of their last 14 games.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers' downward slide in the New York-Penn League standings continued Friday night with a 4-3 loss to the Auburn Doubledays.
Auburn's Ryan Patterson hit his 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot with one out in the seventh inning, lifting the Doubledays from a 3-1 deficit.
Patterson also drove in Auburn's first run, with a single in the third inning, giving him 63 RBIs this season.
The loss spoiled a strong starting performance by the Scrappers' Jensen Lewis, who allowed just one run on five hits in four innings. Lewis struck out and walked two.
Mark Jecmen relieved him and got into trouble in the seventh. Sean Shoffit led off with a single and advanced to second on Cory Patton's one-out base hit.
Patterson followed with his home run.
Errors
Mahoning Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to the first of three Doubledays errors.
Evandy De Leon's fly ball to left field was mishandled by Jacob Butler for a three-base error.
After Jose Chavez struck out, Andrew Lytle grounded out, scoring De Leon.
The Scrappers made it 3-1 in the fourth. Lytle led off with a single and advanced to third when P.J. Hiser's base hit was compounded by second baseman Shoffit's throwing error.
Trevor Mortensen hit a sacrifice fly to score Lytle, then Cirilo Cumberbatch walked and Chad Longworth singled, loading the bases.
Derrick Peterson's grounder was mishandled by Shoffit, allowing Hiser to score.
The Scrappers (32-38) have lost four straight and 11 of their last 14. They resume their five-game series in Auburn tonight.
