BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Engineer's office will close Hitchcock Road between Garver Drive and Western Reserve Road on Tuesday to replace a culvert. Traffic will be detoured along Garver, Glenwood Avenue and Western Reserve. The work is scheduled for completion Sept. 30.
Part of Calla Road reopens
NORTH LIMA -- A section of Calla Road in northeast Beaver Township is open, Ohio Department of Transportation officials said. ODOT officials said that part of Calla Road had been closed while workers replaced a bridge on Interstate 680 above the road. She said the bridge replacement is part of a $3.6 million project to replace five bridges on Interstate 680 in the Youngstown area.
Rape at gunpoint
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are investigating the rape at gunpoint of a 22-year-old Warren woman. The woman said she was raped in the front yard of a home in the 700 block of East Avondale Avenue, behind some high bushes, about 1:30 a.m. Friday by a man who had forced her to leave a local bar at gunpoint. After the reported rape, the assailant robbed the woman of $6.
Howland adds 2 teachers
HOWLAND -- The board of education has hired two teachers for the 2005-06 school year.
As a special meeting Friday, the board hired Laura Delaquila to teach third grade at North Road Intermediate School and Jeffrey Thomas to teach special education at the high school. School officials said they didn't know how much the two would be paid.
Debora DeCiancio was granted a continuing contract as a central office secretary at $15.91 per hour. Andrea Yannucci will be a middle school library assistant at $14.47 hourly.
Trafficker gets prison
WARREN -- A 28-year-old Warren man has been sentenced to nine months in the Lorain Correctional Institutionfor trafficking in cocaine.
Ronndle Lee Lightning of Woodbine Avenue Southeast pleaded guilty to three counts Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. His sentence also includes a six-month suspension of his driver's license. He was accused of selling the drug on Woodbine Avenue during May.
Sex offender sentenced
LISBON -- Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge David Tobin sentenced an East Liverpool man Friday to two years in prison after finding him guilty of a charge of gross sexual imposition.
Patrick K. Williams, 34, was indicted in May on the third-degree felony. He was accused of having sexual contact with a female relative, then 12 years old, in early 2004.
Grant Center program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for a Grant Center orientation program scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. "Grantseeking Basics: An Orientation to the Funding Research Process" is a basic orientation to the Grant Center collection. Grant writing is not included.
This program is intended for representatives of nonprofit organizations new to the process and who want to know more about the library's resources or for previous participants who would like a refresher.
The orientation is free and open to representatives from nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising. No information is available for individuals seeking funds.

Comedy at PSU Shenango
SHARON, Pa. -- Comedian Preacher Moss will bring his "End of Racism" comedy and lecture tour to Penn State Shenango in a free public event at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Lartz Memorial Library. The social commentator offers his insights on "racial understanding vs. racial interaction." His performance launches the campus' 2005-06 Cultural Events Series.
Crowd pelts cruiser
WARREN -- A hostile crowd pelted a city police cruiser with rocks and bottles when it responded to a large fight involving juveniles at Third Street and Highland Avenue Southwest. Damage to the driver's side door of the 2002 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser, driven by Officer Mark Klaholz, was estimated on the police report at $200 in the Thursday night incident. No arrests were made. A training session for third-shift officers was canceled because police had to respond to the disturbance.
Road will close for work
GREENE -- Dennison Ashtabula Road between York Street and Easton Road in Greene Township will be closed Tuesday through Dec. 9 for a bridge replacement, the Trumbull County Engineer reports.
