GIRARD -- You might just say that the unluckiest part of Campbell Memorial's game Friday night for the Girard Indians was Dominique Lucky.
For a player whose name didn't even appear in the program, Lucky's impact in the game was surely felt by the Indians.
All Lucky did was carry the ball 15 times for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner from 20-yards out on their first play of the overtime session as he helped lead the Red Devils to a 34-28, come-from-behind victory over the Indians.
Block talk
"I can't remember the play that was called, but it sure worked," Lucky said. "Give credit to the offensive line tonight for the excellent job that they did all game. They made key blocks all night and the end result was this overtime victory."
Lucky scored on runs of 68, 67 and 20 yards, rushing for over 100 yards in each half as the Red Devils evened their record at 1-1 while sending the Indians to their second defeat.
"[Dominique] Lucky just came out for the team the first week of double sessions and has made a real impact for us," Campbell's first-year coach, John Protopapa, said. "He's just a sophomore and the sky is the limit for him. At halftime, we challenged the offensive line to play good, old-fashioned Red Devil football. In the second half, they really rose to the occasion."
Lucky's performance barely overshadowed that of Indian running back Brett Dutton, who carried the ball 17 times for 118 yards, also scoring three touchdowns on runs of 2, 2 and 22 yards.
Dutton got the Indians on the board first with his 2-yard scamper just 1:12 into the game to give Girard an early 7-0 advantage.
Campbell Memorial needed just one play as Lucky found the end zone from 68 yards out, but a botched placement left the Indians with a 7-6 advantage.
Placement blocked
Dutton then added another 2-yard run at 9:14 of the second quarter, but quarterback Scooter Hargate's placement was blocked and the Indians had to settle for a 13-6 advantage.
Dutton then found the end zone from 22 yards out with just 1:39 remaining in the half and when Hargate found Mark Fiest with the two-point conversion pass, the Indians built a 21-6 margin at the intermission.
In the third quarter, Lucky raced into the end zone from 67 yards at 4:43, and when Lonnie McQueen found Joe Faunda with the conversion pass the Red Devils pulled to within 21-14.
Tee Hymes, who added 61 yards on 11 carries for Campbell, then scored from the 2-yard line just nine seconds into the final period. When sophomore Ryan Lopez added the placement, the score was tied at 21.
"[Ryan] Lopez was added to the team just this week, another player who did not appear on the roster sheet for tonight's game," Protopapa said. "We took him from the soccer team just this week and he responded admirably when pressed into duty."
See-saw touchdowns
Girard made it 28-21 at the 7:14 mark of the final quarter when Dutton caught a 24-yard scoring strike from Hargate, but the Red Devils' Matthias Crosby's scored on a 9-yard run with just 1:04 remaining to cut the lead to one at 28-27.
A successful placement by Lopez then forced the overtime session.
Hargate managed a 4-yard gain on the Indians' first drive of overtime, but his pass for Fiest on fourth down was incomplete and the Red Devils took over.
That is when Lucky added his game-winning 20-yard touchdown scamper on the Red Devils' first play.
Campbell Memorial had 315 total offensive yards, all on the ground, while the Indians carried the ball 36 times for 194 yards, Hargate adding 76 yards on 19 carries.
