MAHONING VALLEY SCRAPPERS Dreams scrapped in pair of shutouts
The team lost its chance for the NYPL playoffs.
BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Getting swept by the Batavia Muckdogs Thursday night was bad enough. Getting shut out in both games was even worse.
Putting the final nail in the coffin, the two losses -- coupled with a pair of victories by the Auburn Doubledays and one by Vermont -- eliminated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers from playoff contention in the New York Penn League.
Justin Blaine and two relievers allowed just four hits to the Scrappers in the nightcap, as Batavia won, 1-0.
Jeremy Slayden was hit by a pitch to lead off the Muckdogs' fourth. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Carl Galloway.
Joe Ness (3-2) started for the Scrappers, allowing one run and five hits in 41/3 innings.
Early game
Joshua Outman allowed one hit in five innings, and Julian Williams' triple in the third inning scored two runs as the Muckdogs won the opener, 3-0.
Outman struck out eight to earn his first victory of the season.
Fernando Quilado finished the game to earn his eighth save.
Only Evandy De Leon, Jose Chavez and Trevor Mortensen managed hits.
In the Batavia third, Orlando Guevera singled with two outs, then Williams hit a deep fly to center. Williams reached third on the play and scored when Chavez, the Mahoning Valley shortstop, dropped the relay throw.
Batavia added its final run an inning later, when Michael Costanzo walked, advanced to second on Clay Harris' single and scored when Scrappers' first baseman P.J. Hiser threw wildly trying to throw him out at third.
