The Glenn Miller Orchestra will be perform in the Dreamland Ballroom in Conneaut Lake Park. The 19-member band continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements, exciting fans who have not heard them played in a long time. Tickets are $40 reserved, and $25 general seating, and are available at the park office or by calling (814) 382-5115.
The now-famous telegram read: "Have found phenomenal 19-year-old singer who could go all the way! Send contract." That telegram was sent by a Columbia Records executive. The singer was Johnny Mathis, and the year was 1956, an Olympic year wear track and field star Mathis was supposed to compete in the Olympic trials. Mathis headed for a New York recording studio and never made it to the Olympics that year, but he did launch a gold-medal music career. Mathis will come to Cleveland's State Theatre at 8 p.m. on Sept. 22. Speaking of the Canfield Fair, Youngstown-based alternative jazz-funk band SounDoctrine will perform two shows there -- at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The band will be on the Rescue Mission stage near gate 8D. SounDoctrine has been touring to promote their new CD, "Endurance," which will be released in October.
"The Voice" is returning the the Valley. Benny Mardones, who earned his nickname because of his near four-octave vocal range and soulful delivery, will perform at B & amp;B Backstage, Boardman on Sept. 9 as a warm-up act for Eddie Money. Mardones plans to perform a number of new songs as well as his classics such as "Into the Night" -- which is one of the 25 most-played singles in radio history. It has been on the airwaves more than 5 million times.
Mardones, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, says Youngstown is one of his favorite places to play. "All the people there have soul," he said.

Irish entertainer Cahal Dunne will give a show entitled, "Freedom Flags," on Nov. 4 at Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle. The Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance step dancers will join Dunne on stage.
