College aid from Pop Shop
The Pop Shop sponsors the Mahoning County Junior Agricultural Educational Assistance Award. This organization works at the fair serving fast food and meals, including breakfast during the fair's six-day run.
The Pop Shop is located in the Junior Fair portion of the fairgrounds and has been using volunteer help exclusively for more than 30 years. Its ultimate purpose is to help Junior Fair participants continue their education beyond high school.
The following graduates were awarded Mahoning County Junior Agricultural Educational Assistance awards for 2005: Sarah Farrant, Heartland Christian High School, will attend University of Findlay; Brian Moff, Columbiana Exempted Village, will attend Ohio State ATI College at Wooster; and Amanda Miller, Canfield High School, and Gina Orlando, Western Reserve High School, will attend Youngstown State University.
Candidates at Dems' tent
Several candidates running for statewide offices will be at the Mahoning County Democratic Party's tent at the fair to meet and talk to fair-goers, said Lisa Antonini, local party chairwoman. The tent is located at the corner of Bishop Road and Beaver Drive.
Judge Jennifer Brunner, running for secretary of state, will be at the tent at noon today, and U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, D-6th, who is running for governor, will be there at 2 p.m. On Friday, state Sen. Charlie Wilson, running for Strickland's congressional seat, will be at the tent at 6 p.m.
Cleveland Law Director Subodh Chandra, running for attorney general, will be at the tent at 5 p.m Saturday, and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, also running for governor, will greet fair-goers at 6 p.m. Saturday
Food bank fund-raiser
Local Pampered Chef Consultants will be collecting donations for Second Harvest Food Bank at the fair. Fair-goers are invited to stop by the Pampered Chef booth in the commercial tent. Kitchen consultants will peel, core and slice apples for a $1 donation to the food bank.
Second Harvest provides food to 210 hunger relief agencies that serve Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Each day, the food bank distributes about 20,000 pounds of food to church pantries, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women and child and adult day-care centers.
