Christian, Richards lead 'Hounds in 7-2 win

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Youngstown SteelHounds (2-1-1) used five-point nights from Jeff Christian (2-3) and Chris Richards (2-3) and a solid night in goal from Simon St. Pierre in his first ever pro start to win on the road, 7-2, Saturday against the Fort Worth Brahmas (3-1-1).
The SteelHounds scored the first goal for the third straight game and played their best period of the season leading 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The SteelHounds goal came late in the period on a four-on-four when Jeff Christian picked off a Brahmas pass and went in the other direction with Chris Richards on an odd-man rush. Christian made goaltender Keni Gibson commit and then slid a pass to Richards who went top shelf for his second goal of the season and team-leading fourth point.
For Christian, it was his first point as a member of the SteelHounds.
Youngstown was outshot in the first period 12-3 as rookie Simon St. Pierre stopped all 12 shots he faced in his first professional start.
Good play in second period
Youngstown continued to play well in the second period and responded after the Brahmas tied the game at one with a power play goal by Derek Mason at the 2:56 mark of the period.
The Hounds answered with three straight second period goals. The first came on the power play when Lorne Misita created a wide-open opportunity for Troy Kahler who buried the puck for his first goal of the season. Jeff Christian redirected a Chris Richards pass at the 9:31 mark of the period giving the Hounds a two-goal lead.
Darryl Lloyd scored his second goal in as many nights at the 14:16 mark when he cleaned up a loose puck in the crease. Richards and Christian drew the assists once again.
Fort Worth outshot the SteelHounds 12-8 in the period and had a two-period total lead of 24-11 but St. Pierre was sharp making 23 saves.
Youngstown continued their offensive explosion in the third period with goals from Christian, Kahler and Richards.
The Hounds outshot the Brahmas 16-7 in the period but for the game were outshot 31-27. St. Pierre earned the victory in his first pro start making 29 saves. Youngstown concludes their five-game road trip tonight in Corpus Christi against the Rayz with face-off scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
