Eric Schaffert ends drought days
Eric Schaffert of Poland has had an on-and-off history of bowling, but he finally rolled a 300 during the "on" phase.
At Boardman Lanes Oct. 13, Schaffert reached the pinnacle during Youngstown Steel/Mopar League action at Boardman Lanes.
The game was the league's first for 2005-06.
Schaffert's perfect game was part of 14 consecutive strikes. His first and third games were 193 and 204 for a 697 set.
Schaffert, in his early 50s, has been an avid bowler since the 1970s. For many years, he averaged over 200 and came close to a perfect game, but never nailed one.
Stepped away
He stepped away from bowling following the 1984 season to focus on his son's tennis career.
Eric, in medical sales for a pharmaceutical company, returned to league competition in 2001 and bowled for the Southside Automotive at Boardman Lanes.
After his absence from competitive bowling, Schaffert discovered how much the equipment and game, in general, changed. He remains a once-a-week league bowler.
"I'm happy for him after all those years of giving up bowling, then coming back," said his wife, Karen. "He loved bowling when he was young, then put his energy into our sons," she said of young Eric and Kevin. "He gave up his hobby."
Young Eric Schaffert will receive a medical degree from Sava University School of Medicine in the Caribbean in 2006, but he's currently doing his clinical rotations at Forum Health's North Side Hospital.
After getting a full scholarship to attend YSU, Kevin made his mark in tennis as a co-captain and the Nos. 1-2 singles player for the Penguins' men's team. He currently teaches tennis at Boardman Tennis Center.
Alexander, Nuzzo perfect
Rob Alexander had 300 as his middle game during Kelley-Robb Funeral Home Classic action at Bell-Wick Oct. 20. By defeating Bubba's Buddies, Geo's Crew won Kelley-Robb's first quarter.
Joe Nuzzo also had 300 in Triple A at A-Plus Family Bowl Oct. 20.
It was the 38th perfect game for the 50-year-old Nuzzo, who had earlier 300s already this fall in Shooting Gallery at Holiday and the McKinley Lanes Challenge League on Friday nights.
Nuzzo is an instructor of business/accounting/business math at Trumbull Business College in Warren, where he is also director of education. Nuzzo also teaches business calculus part-time at YSU.
Sam's Wedge Inn won first quarter in Kernan Insurance Classic at West Side.
