By age 13, Steve Tackett of Warren had "in inner realization" that he did not think along the same lines as other people and that he was he was here for a reason.
"I always had a fascination with mysteries," said Tackett. "I came across a book about UFOs, [unidentified flying objects] and that led me to a book on ESP [extrasensory perception]. One book led to another, and I read and read and read -- books on metaphysics, philosophy, psychology. There finally came an epiphany when I realized that everyone was saying the same thing. Then a voice said, 'You got it, now go teach it.' And what I 'got' was that I understood the nature of reality on a different level."
In 1976, Tackett met a man whom he considers his mentor, Dick Sutphen, author of "You Were Born Again to be Together." When Tackett was at the old Burrows book store at Eastwood Mall, Sutphen's book fell off the shelf in front of him. He later learned of a seminar Sutphen was giving in Scottsdale, Ariz., and flew out to attend it with about 34 others.
Questions
"I kept asking myself, 'What am I doing here?'" Tackett said. "The seminar lasted five days, and we learned about hypnosis and how past life regressions can help in present life. Sutphen told us that psychology says to look to your childhood for answers, but we are just taking it one step further. Your subconscious remembers absolutely everything, from this life and past lives. As Sutphen was speaking, I realized he was putting into words everything I had in my heart and soul. Then after that, I was able to put it into words, too."
In the mid-'80s. Tackett was doing a radio talk show on New Age Cleveland, 105.7. Someone called in a question that befuddled him, and he suddenly found words coming out of his mouth that made sense, but he didn't know where the answer came from.
"That was the first time I realized I was channeling, receiving wisdom from a higher being," Tackett said. "I started teaching in the mid-'80s, and having study group meetings twice a month, and I found myself regularly channeling answers to people's questions."
Class at YSU
Tackett found himself getting asked the same question over and over. So he eventually offered a class at YSU in 1990, in continuing education. "It was called 'Metaphysical Philosophy' and covered everything from past lives, soul mates, human potential, stress management and self-esteem, the nature of reality, channeling and meditation," said Tackett. "Forty-five people signed up for the class. After that, I offered it other places, too. I recorded each class, plus compiled my notes and eventually turned it into a book, 'Awakenings: the Essential Guide to Metaphysics.'" Tackett is also working on a new book, "Mastering Life," which he said is written in language easy for anyone to understand.
"This one is about taking metaphysical skills and principles and applying them to everyday learning," Tackett said. " I cover karma, self-esteem and assertiveness, using the power of the mind, dealing with the masks we wear, and how we are often our own worst enemies."
Healing
Over these many years, Tackett has taken his skills and combined them into what he calls "full spectrum healing." Tackett said he works with many guides, angels and spirits -- including archangel Michael, beings from other dimensions, and the spirit of Mother Earth -- as he does readings for clients.
He says these spirits help him to hone in on places in a person's life where there are blocks, curses or dark beings, which are creating harm for the client. If he is unable to find or solve the problem, he collaborates with others who do deep trance channeling.
He also works with entity attachments, very similar to the practice of shamanic practitioners. "I have taught many counselors how to break attachments with earth-bound spirits," Tackett said. "More and more counselors and psychologists are turning to these techniques as part of their therapy. I have them ask their client what is the strongest negative emotion they feel, and where do they feel it in their body? Then we tell the client to let that feeling completely overwhelm them, and ask them, if that feeling could talk, what would it say? Often the entity will begin to speak. An earthbound spirit doesn't realize it is dead, and so it doesn't move on to the next level. Once we make it aware it is dead, we can send it off to the light."
Tackett said the symptoms of entity attachments are mood swings or changes in personality, tiredness or fatigue, memory lapses, or sudden phobias. He said he encourages people to work through a higher power, according to their religious belief, such as Jesus, Moses or Great Spirit.
