YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney High scored six touchdowns, including four in the first half, and using various methods to do so in a 42-0 defeat of Woodrow Wilson Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium.
Chaney (5-4, 1-1 City Series) used a punishing rushing game to their advantage, outgaining Wilson, 280-to-37.
The Redmen (1-9, 0-2) played well defensively at times, halting Chaney's initial eight-play drive when Terrance Edmonds intercepted the Cowboys' Antwan Rice pass at the 18.
Three straight scores
However, Chaney scored on its next three possessions, going 55 yards on six plays with Rice and Robert McElroy doing the bulk of the running, and Sir Franklin scoring from a yard out in the first quarter.
A five-play, 73-yard drive that featured a 50-yard run by McElroy, ended with Rice scoring on a 4-yard keeper at the 11:11 mark of the second quarter, giving the Cowboys a 15-0 lead.
Chaney gave Wilson good field position when Harold Parker recovered Kory Jackson's fumble, but the Redmen were unable to move the football as they failed to get a first down on six first-half possessions.
For their third score the Cowboys went 65 yards on five plays with a little razzle dazzle. Kory Jackson, on an option pass after a flip from Rice, tossed a 24-yard scoring pass to Victor Toney.
The final Cowboy score of the first half came with just seconds left when Victor Toney blocked Thomas Milligan's punt and William McKinley rambled 24 yards for the score. That gave Chaney a 29-0 halftime lead.
A five-play, 57-yard drive ended with Robert McElroy scoring on a 12-yard run at 5:58 of the third quarter, and with subs liberally used by Chaney, Greg Stanford ran in from 25 yards to end the scoring.
Great effort
"This was a great team effort and what a way to send our seniors out," said Chaney coach Ron Berdis. "We did the things on both sides of the ball that a team has to do to win and every kid that played tonight played hard and I am proud of the way we finished."
Chaney had 18 first downs to six for Wilson and leading the way for that huge rushing advantage was McElroy, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior, who ran for 133 yards on 14 carries.
Rice, the senior quarterback, ran for 66 yards on nine carries, and was 4-of-6 passing for 41 yards.
"We are a hurting team, but I am so proud of what these kids brought to this game tonight," said Wilson coach Brian Marrow. "Take nothing away from Chaney; their great tradition was there tonight and they took it to us."
Wilson finished with six first downs. Sophomore quarterback Lamar McQueen was 5-of-16 for 58 yards.
