Falcons not perfect, but still beat Jets, 27-14
Atlanta got some help from Vinny Testaverde who fumbled three times.
ATLANTA (AP) -- Michael Vick had a terrible game. He didn't have to feel too bad about it.
His team still won.
The same couldn't be said for Vinny Testaverde and the New York Jets.
Vick scored on two short runs and the Atlanta Falcons capitalized on three fumbles by Testaverde to beat the Jets 27-14 on Monday night.
"It's never perfect in the NFL," Falcons coach Jim Mora said. "Sometimes it's not pretty. But the bottom line is we got the win."
Vick played poorly
Vick threw a career-high three interceptions and had the lowest passer rating of his five years in the league. Still, the Falcons managed to win, getting 155 yards rushing from Warrick Dunn and scoring 17 points off Testaverde's fumbles.
"You spot 17 points," the 41-year-old Testaverde said, "and it's hard to get back. That's no way to play football."
Vick wasn't much better. He was 11-of-26 for 116 yards, with only three passes caught by his wideouts. His passer rating was a grim 16.3.
"Everything falls on my shoulders," Vick said. "All I can do is come back the next game, try to get better and make sure it doesn't happen again."
Dunn broke off a 65-yard run in the second quarter when the Falcons (5-2) were backed up on their own 5. That set up a field goal for a 20-0 lead.
First 17 points gifts
The first 17 points were handed over by Testaverde and his feeble offensive line, which has only one player starting in the same spot as Week 1.
Testaverde fumbled a snap from replacement center Pete Kendall, who took over for injured six-time Pro Bowler Kevin Mawae. That led to the first of two 1-yard scoring runs by Vick.
Kendall blamed himself for all three fumbles, saying he was responsible for a botched snap and missed blocking assignments on the other two plays.
"I made three mistakes, three critical mistakes, and they turned them into touchdowns," he said. "Basically, I gave them 17 points tonight. It's embarrassing. I feel horrible."
The geriatric quarterback also took two vicious hits that caused fumbles, setting up Todd Peterson's 22-yard field goal and Chauncey Davis' 24-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
Testaverde's three fumbles tied a career worst. He also threw an interception as the Jets (2-5) dropped to 0-4 on the road this season, averaging a mere 10.3 points in those losses.
