Boxing banquet
NILES -- The 19th Shirl "Jack" Thompson Legends of Leather Club Hall of Fame banquet was held Sunday at Aulizio's Banquet Center.
More then 180 guests were welcomed by Sal Marino, the co-founder and president of the organization, and Mike Elliot, the president of the Boxing Ministry, was the Master of the afternoon's ceremonies.
The banquet was dedicated to the memory of Tony Janiro and the guest speakers were his grandaughter, Tracy Janiro Zingaro, and her husband Michael.
There were four inductees to the hall of fame -- Gino Camelli, a referee for more than 300 amateur and pro bouts; Michael Edward Galassi, an official for the Ohio Former Boxer's Association who had a 49-3 amateur record and trained fighters in the Cleveland area; Tom Huff, who started Boxing World Magazine in 1997, and Boardman attorney Lou Schiavoni, who was a Golden Gloves champion in the '70s.
The Man of the Year John Russell Award went to Donald Sanfrey.
A former trainer, manager and boxer, Sanfrey has been a member of Legends of Leather for 15 years and a Hall of Famer. He has been very instrumental in obtaining funds for the organization.
Elite award recipients were Dennis Thompson (J.P. Marino Award), Steve Bosheff (George "Sonny" Horne Award), Rocky Chirchiglia (Zill Family Award), Josephine Brescia (Frank "Chi Chi" Cordy Award), John Lees (Mike Birskovich Award), James Haynes (Marino-Williams Award), Bernie Profato (Father Anthony Teolis Award), Joe Gentile (Chris Tabor Award), Rick Keenan (Tony Vivo Sr. Award), Jean Carkido (Fighting Sanfrey Award), the widow of Joey Carkido, Reggie Antonucci (Jack Thompson Award), and Adrian D'Amato (Frank Lentine Award).
Billy Lyell of Niles and Johnny Bailey of West Virginia were at the banquet.
Kelly Pavlik was named the "Pride of the Valley" award winner but was unable to attend.
Ursuline girlsdefeat Bristol
HUBBARD -- Katelyn Tondo-Steele and Hannah Snyder scored goals to lead Ursuline High over Bristol, 2-0, Saturday in a Division II girls soccer tournament game.
Tondo-Steele, Dana Hinebaugh and Jessalin Modarelli had assists for the Irish (11-4-3), who will play Mooney at Valley Sports in Struthers Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a district semifinal.
Jolanta Carkido had one save for Ursuline, while Kylie Robertson had 25 saves for Bristol.
Brad Smith namedplayer of week
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Missouri senior Brad Smith was named national offensive player of the week by The Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Smith, a graduate of Chaney High, set a school record with 480 total yards as the Tigers defeated Nebraska, 41-24.
Only the sixth player in NCAA history (and first since 2000) to pass for 200 yards and rush for 200 in the same game, Smith passed for 234 yards (21-of-36, one touchdown) and rushed for 246 (on 28 carries) and scored three touchdowns (4, 79 and 45 yards).
W & amp;J routs Bethany
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- R.J. Zitzelsberger rushed for 122 yards and four touchdowns -- all in the first half -- as Washington & amp; Jefferson blew out Bethany, W.Va., 63-0 on Saturday.
Zitzelsberger had a 1-yard TD in the first quarter and two 1-yard TDs in the second quarter, while adding a 4-yard score just before the half. Ryan Mendel rushed 10 times for 107 yards and a TD for W & amp;J (7-1, 3-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference).
Quarterback Chris Edwards was 11-of-20 for 272 yards and three TDs.
Bethany (1-7, 0-6) was held to 62 yards rushing on 29 carries. Quarterbacks Brian Wineberg, Brent Owens and Matt Blumer went a combined 11-of-26 for 52 yards and four interceptions.
Phantoms win in OT
BLAINE, Minn. -- Mike Maltese's second goal of the game with 2:43 remaining in overtime lifted the Mahoning Valley Phantoms to a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Blizzard Saturday at the North American Hockey League Showcase.
Owen Meyer also scored twice for the Phantoms, while Anthony Ciraulo and Brent Dexter each scored once.
The Phantoms play host to the Traverse City North Stars in two games this weekend -- 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available by calling (330) 965-7500.

*ZURICH, Switzerland -- Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport won the Zurich Open for the fourth time Sunday, beating Switzerland's Patty Schnyder 7-6 (5), 6-3.
*MADRID, Spain -- Rafael Nadal won the Madrid Masters before a roaring home crowd Sunday by rallying past Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia in five sets for his 11th title this year, matching top-ranked Roger Federer's record.
The top-seeded Nadal won 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) for his 79th victory this season, two more than the injured Federer.
