UA new edition for younger readers of Edgar Allen Poe's classic stories is out as "Tales of Terror from Edgar Allen Poe" (Random House, $15.95). This book has six of Poe's tales with a CD reading of the stories. It easily could fulfill a language-arts assignment, too. He is the master of the classic creeps.
UJeff Stone has the latest book out in his Five Ancestors series. "Monkey" (Random House, $15.95) should appeal to adventure-lovers, especially if they have an interest in martial arts. In this book, readers follow Malao, one of five orphaned monks, as he searches for stolen Dragon scrolls amid many dangers and amazing people and animals.
UThis fall marks the fifth anniversary of Johnathan Rand's "Michigan Chillers" He's back with "No. 11: Great Lakes Ghost Ship" (Audiocraft Publishing, $5.99), which begins with a tour of a Coast Guard cutter at Cheboygan.
UJennifer Allison's first book, "Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator" (Penguin Putnam, $10.99) features a 13-year-old psychic Nancy Drew-type character, who is likely to be a fun character for girls who can't get enough of mysteries and a spunky heroine.
UFrom the folks who brought you "Egyptology" and "Dragonology" is "Wizardology." A big book for fans of magical mysteries, "Wizardology: The Book of the Secrets of Merlin" (Candlewick, $19.95) is by Master Merlin, with illustrators John Howe, Helen Ward, Anne Yvonne Gilbert and Tomislav Tomic. It's fat, oversized and full of fun facts, myths and rich illustrations.
UJust in time for Halloween is Book No. 12 in the best-selling Lemony Snicket series. "Art Too Awful to Show" (HarperCollins, $11.99) is the latest adventure in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" books featuring the Baudelaire orphans.
UAlso out is the much-anticipated second book by "Inkheart" author Cornelia Funke, "Inkspell" (Scholastic, $19.99). This book is darker and more sinister than the earlier one, perfect for middle schoolers seeking a suspenseful read. Funke knows how to tell a fine tale. Your Funke fan won't be disappointed.
