In 1998, Richard Filisky, his wife, Shirley, their daughter Jeanmarie and several others founded a nonprofit organization to benefit the planet and people in other countries.
"Shirley was the Mahoning County environmental educator," Filisky said. "She went around to schools teaching people about recycling, and realized how many usable items were ending up in landfills, particularly home medical equipment like walkers, special beds.
"When Jeanmarie was working on her masters in Sociology/Community Development, one of her projects was to create a nonprofit organization which collected home medical equipment and refurbished them to give to people that had no funds or insurance to buy them. It became so successful that they needed a back door for excess equipment.
"In the meantime, we learned about the Denton Amendment that allows needed humanitarian aid to be shipped on military planes, ships, etc., to other countries free of charge, when space is available."
Through a series of meeting the right people and getting the right information, HERS was formed. Their Austintown Warehouse recently shipped seven cargo loads to a number of Central and South American Countries, including El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. They accept medical equipment, clothing, educational equipment, any usable items, but not computers.
