hNew book offers tipsto keep the deer away
We're not convinced a truly deerproof landscape is possible, but we're willing to give Rhonda Massingham Hart the benefit of the doubt.
Hart has written "Deerproofing Your Yard & amp; Garden," a guide to deer-resistant plants, homemade and commercial deer deterrents, fencing and netting options and a bunch of other tricks to keep Bambi from wreaking havoc on your back yard. Jim Wilson, the former "Victory Garden" host who wrote the book's foreword, lauds Hart for her research into deer behavior and effective deer-deterring strategies, as well as her willingness to discount some approaches as ineffective.
"Deerproofing Your Yard & amp; Garden" is published by Storey Publishing and sells for $14.95 in paperback.
FEMA offers suggestionsin case a disaster strikes
If a weather disaster were to strike, would you know what to do? Could you find an evacuation route or a temporary shelter?
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Web site (www.FEMA.gov) has dozens of brochures and documents on how to prepare for everything from flooding to fires. To read an emergency preparedness guide, go to the Web site and click on "Education and Training" at the top of the page.
www.AceHardware.com also has information on creating a family disaster plan. The site offers advice on preparing for and recovering from hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and extreme winter conditions.
High-end designerjoins Target family
Thomas O'Brien joins a growing list of high-end designers creating low-priced product lines for Target. Just as Rachel Ashwell of Shabby Chic and Isaac Mizrahi have been successful at the big-box chain, O'Brien is trying, too, with a contemporary collection that is reasonably priced.
Ribbed, blue wine glasses for $3.99, Modern standing floor lamp for $59.99 and clocks from $19.99 to $24.99 are being stocked in stores this week and on the chain's Web site, Target.com.
Stylish hardware
Hardware used as an accent in contemporary kitchen cabinetry is a wonderful way to add personality and whimsy.
Brushed metal is popular, as are long, sleek pulls.
Some cabinetry uses recessed pulls, which eliminates hardware and instead uses channels or holes cut into the panel so the panel is completely flush.
