DISTRICT ROUNDUP Johnson carries Salem past Howland, 30-14
SALEM -- Senior J.J. Johnson broke a 75-year old school record in leading Salem High to a 30-14 win over Howland Friday.
Johnson carried 31 times for 241 yards to give him 1,508 rushing yards this year, snapping the mark of 1,445 yards established by Ed Beck in 1930.
Through nine games Johnson has 237 carries for 1,508 yards, an average of 6.3 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 6 and 13 yards to give him 19 touchdowns for the Quakers (6-3, 3-3 Metro Athletic Conference).
Johnson wasn't the only top running back in the game.
Howland's Lance Smith ran 27 times for 112 yards and a 1-yard touchdown.
This year, Smith has carried 202 times for 1,572 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Tigers (4-5, 1-4).
Canton South 41,West Branch 26
CANTON -- Devon Torrence (4-5, 2-4) rushed for 157 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns in Canton South's victory over the Warriors (4-5, 2-4) in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.
Tony Ash rushed six times for 146 yards and scored on runs of 89, 5 and 37 yards for Canton South.
Andy Lamancusa gained 91 yards on 12 carries for the Warriors, which included TD runs of 3 and 22 yards.
West Branch's Eric Balputnis returned a kickoff 80 yards for a TD, and B.J. Wolfgang caught a 10-yard TD pass from Steve McNeely for the final score of the contest.
