Weather Channel to feature Dr. Jerri Nielsen's ordeal with cancer
"Storm Stories," the Weather Channel program that focuses on the inspiring experiences of ordinary people who are placed in extraordinary circumstances due to the weather, will highlight the story of Canfield native Dr. Jerri Nielsen, whose 1999 ordeal made national headlines.
"Facing Cancer at the South Pole" tells how Dr. Nielsen was rescued from Antarctica after she discovered that she had breast cancer.
Dr. Nielsen was the sole doctor serving a team of researchers at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station when she discovered the cancer. Drugs were airdropped so she could treat herself before a successful rescue attempt was made.
