Former prison guard gets one-year sentence

WARREN -- A former corrections officer at the state's Trumbull Correctional Institution has been sentenced to a year in jail as the result of a reverse sting operation.
Howard J. Winkleman, 30, of Parkman Road, was sentenced Thursday by Judge John M. Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to one year in prison for the illegal conveyance of drugs onto prison grounds and six months for trafficking in heroin.
The sentences will run concurrently, said Chuck Morrow, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor. Winkleman pleaded guilty to the charges and waived a presentence report.
Morrow said Ohio State Highway Patrol investigators at the Southington post with the authority of the prosecutor's office gave Winkleman $600 and a quarter-ounce of heroin to take into the prison. He was arrested Aug. 12, and the drugs never made it into the facility.
