Second-half goals key Cardinals
Boardman scored a last-minute goal to upend Uniontown Lake, 2-1.
CANFIELD -- Senior center-forward Liz Vernal and right wing Audra Frimpong had the second-half goals for Canfield (9-4-4), which defeated Niles 2-0 in a Division I sectional opener on Wednesday.
Frimpong, a sophomore, also had an assist for the Cardinals, who beat the Red Dragons earlier in the season at Canfield, 2-1, then played to a 0-0 scoreless tie last Thursday. Senior goalie Ashley Hunter was injured in last Thursday's game. In her place Wednesday night, freshman goalie Anokha Padubidri stopped 12 shots.
"The girls rallied around her," first-year coach Tim Wensel said of Padubidri, who was the JV keeper.
Wednesday's game was scoreless at halftime, but Vernal's goal came 15 minutes into the 40-minute second half. Frimpong tallied with 10 minutes remaining.
Kelsy Mikesell had 19 saves for Niles.
In Canfield's regular-season finale last Saturday, Kayla LaMagna replaced Hunter, who injured her leg.
Canfield's next game is Saturday at 3 p.m. at home against Boardman.
Boardman 2, Uniontown Lake 1
BOARDMAN -- Mallory Hay scored the winning goal on an assist from Chole Zidian with 57 seconds remaining for Boardman.
Danielle Deley gave Boardman (6-8-3) a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half on an assist from Hay. Hannah Erb scored the goal for Lake with 18 minutes remaining in the contest.
Boardman had 18 shots on goal and Lake had 12.
The Spartans' Lani Blad had 10 saves. Danielle Fleischman had six saves for Lake.
Fitch 5, Poland 4
POLAND -- In a penalty shootout, Fitch scored five goals and Poland four in the Div. I sectional tournament game in the Bulldogs' stadium.
Erica Bortmas, Kristi Brendlinger, Amanda Sprowl, Jodi Bowlen and Brittney Getz scored the goals for the Falcons (11-3-3), who will play host to Hubbard at 3 p.m. Saturday. Hubbard beat Canton GlenOak in a shootout on Wednesday.
Cara Calai, goalkeeper for the Falcons, had a save as she stopped the third shot tried by Poland on its penalty kicks.
Ashley Luthern, Sarah Anderson, Stephanie Armstrong and Maureen Malone scored the four goals for the Bulldogs (11-5-1).
The Falcons and Bulldogs couldn't score in regulation and two 10-minute overtimes.
Howland 6, Alliance 0
HOWLAND -- Howland senior Maria Sember scored her first career varsity goal for the top-seeded Tigers.
Deja Amato added two goals, while Megan Long, Melissa Kohn and Olivia Wilson for Howland (14-1-2), which will play host to North Canton Hoover at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Long, Erin Gilmour, Allie Airhart and Chelsea Palm had assists.
Andrea Sapp had 20 saves for Alliance, which was outshot 26-0.
Boys
HOWLAND -- Mark Hammond, Tim Lee, Ryan Gerin and Eric Albani scored goals for Howland, which beat Warren Harding 4-0 in a Division I boys sectional opener on Tuesday.
Ian Jones had two assists and Josh Keul had one for Howland, which will play Fitch on Saturday.
