Dye pack spoils day for gunman who robbed Market Street bank
YOUNGSTOWN -- A gunman who robbed a Market Street bank is probably seeing red.
Youngstown police and the FBI said the man walked into the Bank One branch at 2900 Market St. about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday demanding cash and holding a revolver. He fired one round into the ceiling. Along with the money, the teller placed a dye pack in the bag, police said.
After the robber ran from the bank toward Oak Hill Avenue, the dye pack opened, spraying the money and presumably the robber with red dye, the FBI said. After the dye pack exploded, the robber fired another shot, the FBI said.
Police and the FBI recovered $6,310, most of it splashed with red dye. The total stolen has not been revealed.
The robber is described as a black man in his early 20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing black pants, a white shirt and a blue-and-white bandanna.
Police and FBI agents spent about two hours near the bank Tuesday searching for the suspect. As of late Tuesday, the suspect remained at large.
