150 cigarette cartons stolen from gas station
POLAND -- Someone stole more than $5,600 worth of cigarettes from a Center Road gas station.
Township police received a call of an alarm sounding at Marathon early Monday. The store reported 150 cartons of Marlboro cigarettes had been taken.
Last week, about $3,600 worth of cigarettes, or 92 cartons of Marlboro and Newport cigarettes were reported taken from East Point Place, Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road.
Taxes due Thursday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Treasurer John Reardon expects to collect about $22 million in personal property business taxes when all returns are in his office.
Reardon said personal property taxes on inventory and equipment and businesses for 2005 are due by the close of business Thursday.
As of Monday, Reardon's staff had taken in $14 million.
Agency secures grants, will renovate gymnasium
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jennifer Cousin Miller, executive director of Associated Neighborhood Centers, a United Way social service agency, recently got grants from three local foundations: $30,000 from The Raymond Wean Foundation; $12,000 from the Youngstown Foundation; and $5,000 from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley-Kennedy Family Foundation. The money will go toward the renovations of the gymnasium at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road.
Candidates forum
LORDSTOWN -- A candidates forum will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school auditorium. Board of education and village council candidates will present their platforms and answer questions. There will also be a presentation about the school district's 6.2-mill, five-year renewal levy. The forum is sponsored by senior government students.
Two fires investigated
YOUNGSTOWN --Firefighters are investigating fires at two vacant houses. Firefighters were called at 7:01 p.m. Monday to a fire at 1220 Grandview St. on the city's East Side. Upon arrival, firefighters saw fire on the upper floor of the two-story house and in the attic. The abandoned house was destroyed in the fire. There was a suspicious fire at the same house about a year ago, said Capt. Alvin Ware, the city's chief fire investigator.
At 10:12 p.m. Monday, firefighters responded to an alarm at 133 W. Florida Ave. on the city's South Side. The fire caused $5,000 worth of damage to the house's first floor and front porch. The house is valued at $8,000. There were no injuries reported.
Church hosts forum
MINERAL RIDGE -- First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge, 1654 Main St. will sponsor a candidates night at 6 p.m. Sundayfor residents running for Weathersfield Board of Education and township trustee.
The event will take place at the church fellowship hall and is sponsored by the church Education Committee. Carole Rummel will be moderator.
Candidates for the school board and trustee will each give five-minute presentations, take questions from the audience and then a question-and-answer session will follow and then final statements.
Recycling trick or treat
AUSTINTOWN -- The Green Team and Austintown Fitch High School will sponsor a recycling trick or treat event from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Raccoon Road recycling site, across from the Austintown Library.
People are asked to bring recyclables including plastics #1-5, newspapers, magazines, glass bottles and cardboard.
Children under 14 who dress in costume will receive candy and can enter to win a gift certificate to Wal-Mart or a Fitch sweatshirt for best costume. If children wear Little Colts, Falcons or any Austintown sports uniform and are accompanied by a parent, they will receive a ticket to any Austintown High School sporting event.
