Police: Shots exchanged by guard, intruder
CAMPBELL -- Police said a security guard for Sherman International exchanged gunfire with a man near the Union Lane plant, but no one was injured.
The guard, a 57-year-old Youngstown man, told police he was leaving the company grounds, located in the former LTV plant, around 2:54 p.m. Sunday when he saw three men walk around a fence onto the plant property.
The guard said he stopped his vehicle and yelled at the men, who were about 175 feet away, telling them they were on private property. At that point, one of the trio turned around and fired a shot at him from a handgun, the guard said, adding that he returned fire, getting off one shot before the three men fled.
Police checked the area but couldn't find the men. A generator, a power saw and an extension cord were found near the area where the men were last seen. Ownership of the items wasn't immediately determined.
