Parkway West to be renamed

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A major roadway known as the Parkway West will be renamed Interstate 376 in January 2009.
The highway connects the city with its south and west suburbs and Pittsburgh International Airport. It begins in the city as Interstate 279, becomes U.S. Routes 22-30, and finally state Route 60.
Interstate 376 currently stretches from downtown to Monroeville, about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh. The project would simply rename existing highways that connect to that highway.
The change, which had been sought by local business and political leaders, should be less confusing to motorists, officials said.
U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart said the new designation will increase access to and from downtown Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh International Airport and Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
