Silent horror filmat public library
WARREN -- To mark Halloween, the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., will show "The Bat," a classic 1926 silent horror film, at 2 p.m. on Oct. 29.
For many years, "The Bat" was regarded as a "lost" film with no known prints existing. It is regarded as a prototype for the haunted house film genre that flourished in the 1930s and 1940s.
The plot outline involves a masked criminal who dresses like a giant bat terrorizing guests at an old house rented by a mystery writer.
The movie is based on a stage play by Mary Robert Rinehart and Avery Hopwood and is renowned for its use of miniatures and striking set design by William Cameron Menzies. Menzies later lent his skills as a production designer and director to two memorable 1953 horror films: "The Maze" and "Invaders from Mars."

Dr. Elaine Anderson, associate professor of music at Mount Union College, is leading the group this year.
The Halloween theme is a new idea this year. "The Christmas season is an extremely busy time for everyone, and, we thought we'd try something different this season with a Halloween program," said Anderson.
There will be Halloween-themed orchestra music including "The Devil's Trill" featuring Bohdan Subchak as a violin soloist, "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Danse Macabre." A short story, written by Frank Tascone, assistant professor of English at Mount Union, will usher in each of the musical pieces. Pedro "P.J." Chavez, a 2004 Mount Union graduate, will serve as narrator.
Members of the orchestra will be dressed in costume and are asking members of the audience to do the same. "There will be a costume contest for the audience at 6 p.m. in the lobby of Alliance High School," said Anderson.
Admission is free for children accompanied by an adult as well as for high school and college students with a student ID. Adult tickets are $5 at the door. For advanced sale tickets please call (330) 829-8102.
