Penguins lose 3-1
PITTSBURGH -- Vincent Lecavalier scored a goal and set up two others and the Tampa Bay Lightning extended Pittsburgh's season-opening winless streak to a franchise record-tying six games by winning 3-1 Saturday night.
The Penguins -- the league's only winless team -- are 0-2-4 during only the second winless six-game start in team history, The other came when they were 0-3-3 in 1969-70, the franchise's third season.
Crosby set up Ziggy Palffy's slap shot from the top of the slot in the third for the Penguins' only goal, and the 18-year-old rookie now has at least one point in all six Penguins games, with two goals and seven assists.
But Crosby contributed to the flurry of Penguins penalties that kept Tampa Bay on the power play for much of the Lightning's decisive two-goal second period. He drew a slashing penalty at 12:17 and then complicated it by complaining, and was also given an unsportsmanlike penalty that gave the Lightning a four-minute power play.
Crew ties D.C. United
WASHINGTON -- Jaime Moreno's penalty kick in the 75th minute left D.C. United and the Columbus Crew tied 2-2 Saturday night in the teams' MLS regular season finale.
Crew goalkeeper Matt Jordan leaned left and Moreno shot to his right to remain perfect on nine penalty kicks this season for defending MLS Cup champion D.C. United (16-10-6). United will face Chicago in the conference semifinals.
The goal was Moreno's team-leading 16th of the season. However, he came up short in his bid for the MLS Golden Boot award as New England's Taylor Twellman scored his 17th goal Saturday night against the Fire.
Edson Buddle scored his second goal of the game off a throw-in from Simon Elliott that was headed in Buddle's direction by Chad Marshall. Buddle punched it home to give Columbus a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute.
Buddle also headed home a goal off a throw-in from Jamal Sutton that gave Columbus (11-16-5) a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of its season finale.
