Westminster to award more freshmen scholarships
NEW WILMINGTON , Pa. -- Westminster College has announced the awarding of an additional nine Jerb Miller Scholarships to incoming freshmen this fall.
Each scholarship is a four-year renewable grant at $10,000 per year for a total $40,000.
Westminster had announced the award of 45 of the scholarships earlier this month but found that the names of nine recipients had been left off the list.
The scholarship program is named for Dr. Jerb Miller, a professor of education at Westminster until his death in 1992.
Invited to nominate
The college funds the program and invites Westminster alumni who are educators to nominate a deserving student who has a grade point average of at least 3.5 for one of the scholarships.
The college grants the scholarships based on those endorsements and confirmation of a student's academic credentials.
Local recipients among the nine additional awards are:
Sarah Sporrer, Seneca Valley High School, daughter of Lawrence and Linda Sporrer of Zelienople, Pa.
Kimberly Swihart, Neshannock High School, daughter of Thomas and Christine Swihart of New Castle.
Marianne Selby, Beaver Falls High School, daughter of Robert and Patricia Selby of Darlington, Pa.
Kristin Skelley Greenville High School, daughter of Charles and Susan Skelley of Greenville.
