Westminster
Aaron Titus, a freshman member of the men's cross country team from Badger High, was named Titan men's athlete of the week. Titus was honored for leading Westminster to a second-place finish at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational held at Mount Pleasant last Saturday. Titus placed seventh in a 36-man field in a time of 30 minutes, 40 seconds.
Hanna Parker, a sophomore on women's volleyball team, was named the Titan women's athlete of the week. Parker led Westminster to three-game wins over Thiel and Bethany. She had a team-high 14 digs with three service aces against Thiel, and a team-best 26 digs versus Bethany.
Baldwin-Wallace
Sophomore Cassandra Turic (Poland) and freshman Lindsay Brickner (Lisbon) are members of the women's cross country team. Turic's best 5-kilometer time this year is 20:54 at the Bowling Green Invitational, as she placed 40th out of 83 runners. She also turned in 21:52 at the Case Western Reserve Invitational and 22:24 at the Keene State (N.H) Invitational. In her first 6k race, Turic ran 24:58 at the Wilmington Invitational to place 47th out of 83 runners. Brickner's best 5k time is 21:33 at the Case Western Reserve Invitational for 39th place out of 102 runners. She also clocked 21:32 at both the Bowling Green and Keene State (N.H) meets. And in her first 6k race of the season, Brickner clocked 24:23 at the Wilmington Pre-Regional Invitational to place 38th out of 83 runners. Turic is the daughter of Alaci and Harry Turic and is majoring in child psychology. Brickner is the daughter of Valerie and Fred Brickner and is majoring in special education.
Hiram
The women's basketball team will have three new additions this season with area connections. Joining the team are freshmen players Stephanie Zunic (Canfield) and Sara Porter (Lowellville) and assistant coach Ann Marie Martin (Youngstown State). Zunic, a guard, was a second-team All-Metro Athletic Conference pick as a junior and senior. She also won the team's Outstanding Sophomore Award, Most Improved Player Award as a junior and the Coach's Award her senior year. As a senior, Zunic helped Canfield to share the MAC championship. Porter, a forward, was a second-team All-Inter County League selection at Lowellville. She helped the Rockets to win the district championship and take regional runner-up for two years, and won two letters. Martin, a graduate of Valley Forge High in Parma, played basketball for YSU and now is a science teacher at Austintown Fitch High. Martin will assist coach Don Feren, the former South Range girls basketball coach. Other area players on the team are juniors Allison Davis (Boardman) and Abbey Gorby (East Palestine).
Mount Union
Jess DiCarlo (Austintown Fitch) is a senior outside hitter with the volleyball team and a four-year letter winner. She has played in 65 games this year and ranks among the team leaders in kills (166), blocks (41), assists (30) and digs (181). She helped the Purple Raiders to an 11-8 record as of Oct. 11.
In men's soccer, Ryan Petruska (Ursuline) started the first 12 games this year. He is a defensive standout and has scored one goal. Petruska is a two-year letter winner.
In women's soccer, Jenny Singleton, a sophomore defenseman, has played in all 12 games (5-6-1 record). She played in five games last season a a freshman and won on a letter.
Malone
Luke McCluggage (Jackson-Milton) is a sophomore on the men's cross country team. McCluggage placed 29th in 26:52.7 at the Ohio Intercollegiate Meet held Oct. 7 at Ohio Wesleyan. Malone placed third among 41 teams.
