October designation
CANTON -- The Council for Christian Colleges & amp; Universities has designated October as Christian Higher Education Month. In conjunction with this, CCCU has created a Web site showcasing significant contributions Christian colleges and their alumni are making to society. The site offers profiles of 21 outstanding alumni representing the more than 175 CCCU member and affiliate institutions. Malone College alumna Dr. Meredythe Scheflen (1950), founder and chancellor of Bolivian Evangelical University, is among the 21.
Chojnacki honored
CORTLAND -- The Buckeye Association of School Administrators, during its recent fall conference in Columbus, presented Dr. Matthew Chojnacki with the Exemplary Leadership award for 2005.
Chojnacki recently retired as superintendent of Lakeview schools, having previously served in that position for McDonald schools and as an administrator in Hubbard schools.
The award is presented annually to "recognize outstanding educational leadership which has resulted in the enhancement and improvement of educational opportunities for the elementary and secondary students of Ohio."
The Buckeye Association of School Administrators membership is composed of school leaders from Ohio.
Company donates to SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A Pittsburgh-based surface mining and land reclamation company has committed to a $20,000 donation to Slippery Rock University to create scholarships for graduates of Laurel High School in Lawrence County. The first $1,000 Quality Aggregates Scholarship will be awarded next spring for the Laurel High School graduate with the highest grade point average who applies and is admitted to Slippery Rock for fall 2006. The fund will be administered by the Slippery Rock University Foundation Inc. Last year, Quality Aggregates Inc. donated limestone boulders from its quarry in Princeton, Pa., to create a walkway sculpture on the university's main quad near Bailey Library.
Test date set for ACT
YOUNGSTOWN -- College-bound high school students can take the ACT college admission and placement exam Dec. 10, the next national test date. The deadline for postmark deadline on mailed registration forms and online registrations is Nov. 4. There is a late registration deadline of Nov. 17, but it carries a late fee assessment of $18.
Students can get registration forms from their high school guidance counselor or by visiting the ACT student Web site at www.actstudent.org. They can also use the Web site to find the testing location closest to them. The ACT achievement test measures student performance in English, reading, mathematics and science. An optional writing test is also available. The basic registration fee is $29. The writing test carries an additional $14 fee. Free sample tests are available on the Web site or from school guidance counselors.
VFW youth essay contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The deadline for this year's annual Patriot's Pen youth essay writing contest sponsored by District Eight Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary is Nov. 1. The theme is "Who Are Today's Patriots?" The contest is open to all pupils, including home-schooled pupils, in grades six, seven and eight. Contestants write a 300-400-word essay to compete for prizes at various levels. The first place national winner gets a $10,000 savings bond and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. District Eight covers Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage and Summit counties. For information, contact your local VFW post or auxiliary.
HealthFest at SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's annual HealthFest, offering free screenings along with the latest information on a variety of health and physical activity issues, will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center.
The free program is open to both the campus and the community.
The screenings include osteoporosis, chiropractic, pulse oxygen, blood sugar, body fat composition, blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, vision and physical therapy.
A variety of health-related organizations will staff information tables and Visiting Nurses of Western Pennsylvania will have its home education unit on hand.
