EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Cvercko brothers, Andy and Jack, natives of Campbell who played football for Campbell Memorial High under coach John Knapick, continue to reap tributes and remain important parts of the football history at Northwestern University.
The Cverckos, both first-team All-Americans while at Northwestern -- Andy as a tackle in 1958 and Jack as a guard in 1962 -- have been inducted into the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame and also included in the Otto Graham Wildcat Honor Roll.
The brothers were inducted into the hall of fame together in 2000, selected to the Contemporary Era group of inductees. They later were included in the honor roll in 2004.
The honor roll is a tribute to Otto Graham, who starred as a quarterback for both Northwestern and the Cleveland Browns. It is a wall-like memorial located at Ryan Field in the upper deck's west facade.
The wall lists all of Northwestern's football All-Americans, Big Ten Championship teams and bowl teams.
Two All-American honors
Andy Cvercko actually enjoyed two All-American honors at Northwestern. An engineering major, he was a first-team Academic All-American in 1958.
He went on to a four-year career in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers (1961), Dallas Cowboys (1961-62) and the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins (1962).
Jack Cvercko gained the distinction of being the first Northwestern athlete featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1963.
Andy Cvercko now is retired in Oak Park, Ill. He had served as a guest researcher at the Argonne National Laboratories in Chicago later in his career.
Jack Cvercko is living in Ormund Beach, Fla., and is chairman of the mathematics department at the Daytona Community College System.
