1 event plus 5 awards equals history being made

Youngstown State University is the first to earn that many in one event.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A group of Youngstown State University math students crunched and calculated their way to winning an unprecedented five awards at the MathFest 2005 competition in Albuquerque, N.M., in August.
YSU is the first institution to earn five awards at a single MathFest competition. No institution ever had students garner more than three awards during a single competition.
YSU has had three winners at each of four past MathFests.
The event is conducted annually at the national meeting of the Mathematical Association of America and the national mathematics honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon. YSU students competed against 1,000 mathematicians from across the country this year in making research presentations.
Winning awards went to Nicole Casacchia of Columbiana, David Gohlke of Youngstown, Joseph Kolenick of Austintown, David Martin of Warren and Maria Salcedo of Boardman.
Thomas Cochran of Pulaski, Pa., and Ted Stadnick of Austintown also made presentations during the competition.
The audience at the event was impressed with the number of awarded presentations given by the YSU students, said Doug Faires, professor emeritus of mathematics and statistics and a faculty adviser at YSU.
The results also impressed the YSU Board of Trustees, which approved a resolution at its Oct. 4 meeting congratulating the students on their performance.
