List of tips for doing laundry

Dear Readers: If you have family members who need to know a little more about the basics of doing their own laundry, here's some information you can post in your laundry room:
URead the care labels, detergent labels and washer and dryer settings first.
USeparate light-colored clothing from dark. Do not wash together. Wash same-colored clothing together to avoid fading and bleeding.
UClose zippers and snaps, and empty pockets before putting clothing into the washing machine.
UDo not stuff the washer or dryer too full, because garments will not get clean or dry well. Don't add wet clothing to a dryer with a partially dried load.
UNever use bleach on silk, wool, spandex or acetates.
UMeasure the correct amount of detergent and put it in the machine first, not on top of clothes. Never pour bleach onto fabrics, because it could damage them.
USet the washing machine on the appropriate water temperature for the garments inside. Turn the dryer on the right fabric setting, too.
Dear Heloise: When traveling, take a gallon zipper bag and fill it with all sizes of plastic bags. It lies flat in the suitcase, and I've always found uses for them while on a trip. Sue Eubanks, Katy, Texas
Dear Heloise: I read the column where the reader wanted sheets marked at the bottom to identify the foot. I am planning to make a design at the top center with fabric paint so I have a mark to line up with the center of the headboard. Linda Cowan, Valparaiso, Ind.
Dear Readers: How can you tell if spices and herbs are still fresh? It's by sight, smell and taste. If there is loss of color, the fragrance is no longer intense and the flavor is not apparent, then it's time to toss them. And to ensure that your spices last as long as possible, store in airtight containers away from heat, moisture and light. Heloise
Dear Heloise: With the holidays approaching, I find it useful to put & quot;to & quot; and & quot;from & quot; tags on the presents I give -- not just on the wrapping, but on the item itself. I write on the back or bottom of the gift, or I attach a tag with a safety pin. This really helps me keep things straight when I am wrapping presents, and afterward when there is a big pile of gifts from a family gift exchange. Ellen in California
