Firefighters rescue man
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters used a ladder to bring down the male resident of 39 S. Richview Ave. from a back porch roof around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, reports show. No injuries were reported. The fire started in the basement closet under the steps and extended into walls on the first floor. The closet had a lot of old wires in it, the fire department said. A neighbor who saw sparks in the basement window called in the fire. Damage to the two-story house and contents was estimated at $23,000.
Firehouse will be open
WARREN -- The fire department will hold its annual open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the central fire station, 111 South St. S.E., in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week. Families are invited to tour the fire station, see firefighting equipment and the fire safety trailer, and watch vehicle extrication, vehicle firefighting and rope rescue demonstrations. Police will conduct a police dog demonstration and provide identification kits for children.
Walking to raise money
AUSTINTOWN -- Township firefighter John Fritz will walk from township fire station No. 1 on state Route 46 to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland to raise money for charity. He will begin his journey Monday in his full firefighter gear to benefit the hospital, The Military Order of the Marine Corps Devil Dogs, and Tri-County Spina Bifida.

DUI citations issued
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township police issued 32 traffic citations during four Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence Task Force sessions in September.
The task force, under the guidance of the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office, used 11 officers for a total of 34 hours during the month.
Scam of senior citizens
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township Police Chief Joseph Consiglio is warning residents, especially senior citizens, that Farmer's National Bank is not calling and asking for checking and savings account numbers. He said senior citizens primarily are being victimized by a scam in which people call them and asking for this information. He said five senior citizens in the township have been called.
Candidates forum
JACKSON -- A forum for Jackson Township trustee and the Jackson-Milton Board of Education candidates is set for 7 p.m. Monday at Jackson-Milton High School. The event is sponsored by the North Jackson Business Association and the North Jackson Citizens Association.
Rabies shots available
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city health department will have rabies shots available for dogs, cats and ferrets from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking deck of the former South Side Hospital, now Oak Hill Renaissance Place. Directions: from the Mahoning Ave./Fifth Ave. bridge, where Anthony's on the River is located, follow Oak Hill south to the cemetery on the right, and Oak Hill Renaissance Place is on the left. The shots cost $3 each.
OVI saturation patrols
The Operating Vehicle Impaired task force will conduct saturation patrols from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Mahoning County. Police agencies will have extra officers on patrol, enforcing a zero tolerance for OVI offenders and those not wearing safety belts. The task force will also focus on motorcyclists. Of the 128 motorcycle fatalities in Ohio in 2004, about one-third were the result of drug/alcohol involvement, according to the task force. Funds for extra patrols comes from grants administered through the Goshen Police District.
Robbery at Rite Aid
FARRELL, Pa. -- A man welding a knife robbed Rite Aid Pharmacy on Sharon-New Castle Road. Southwest Regional Police said the man demanded OxyContin at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday. He ran off after getting some of the drug.
