Austintown woman reports possible scam
AUSTINTOWN -- A 69-year-old Roanoak Avenue woman told police she was possibly the victim of an attempt to get her bank and checking account numbers.
She told police that people who identified themselves as employees of a company called the National Verification Office called her Wednesday to tell her they believed her banking account number had been accessed. One of the employees told her he wanted to secure the account. He then turned her over to a woman who said she was from the company's security department, a police report says.
The woman gave a phone number that was supposedly a number for the security department, but the victim and police were unable to get through to the company on that number or the main number, which the victim accessed through star-69 on her phone. A recording says the company is closed, the report says.
Police said they have had about 15 calls from residents who reported getting calls from the company, but none gave out their information. Police said they don't know if the company actually exists.
