Hubbard rallies to grab second straight TAC title



The Eagles dropped the first two games to Girard before pulling out the win.
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard High volleyball team's Trumbull Athletic Conference championship streak is intact, but only after the Eagles rallied from a two-match deficit to defeat Girard.
Playing to create a three-way tie at the top of the TAC, Phil Walters' Indians jumped out with 25-22 and 25-23 victories Wednesday on the Eagles' home court.
Chuck Montgomery's squad (20-2, 13-1 TAC) responded with 25-13 and 25-19 wins then secured the championship with a 15-10 victory in the fifth match.
Callie Oyler led the Eagles, this week's No. 5 team in a statewide poll of Division II coaches, with 11 kills and 15 points with two aces. Maggie Bogdan made 13 kills and 10 blocks.
Kim Budd had 32 digs and Kate Tobey 28 while Colleen Gasser made 43 assists.
For the Indians (16-6, 11-3), Chelsea Morrison and Elyse Roscoe each made 13 kills. Courtney Madden made eight blocks and 19 digs.
Hillary Patterson scored 12 points with six aces and Alysha Nickels made 48 assists.
Girard, which is ranked 12th in the state poll in Div. III, finishes third in the league as Lakeview posted a 12-record.

LEAVITTSBURG -- Lauren McCumber had 11 points and Lindsay Whetzel had eight kills and eight digs for Lakeview (19-3, 12-2 TAC). Michelle Antonelli scored 21 aces.
For LaBrae (13-9, 7-7), Lia Gordon had eight points, Maddie D'Orio had 12 kills and 13 digs and Lindsay Higgins had 17 assists.

Brandi Lance had seven points and eight assists, Nicole Parkhurst had seven digs and Sasha McGregor had five aces had five blocks for Newton Falls (3-17, 2-12). Amber Ackerman had 12 points, four aces and five digs, Haley York had 12 kills and five blocks and Chentel Greathouse had 13 assists for Champion (1-17, 0-14).

YOUNGSTOWN -- Janie Williams had three aces, two blocks and one kill for the Irish (9-10, 4-3 Steel Valley Conference).
Angeline Rich made eight kills while Danielle Crafter had two aces, two kills and five points.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Breonna Rivers scored 16 points, with three aces, 13 kills and three digs. Jacquela Teamor made 20 assists and Jasmyn Hopkins six blocks for the Cowgirls (14-5).
Jeanette McLaughlin scored 19 points to pace the Wildcats (7-15). Brianne Ciccone made four aces and 14 kills. Dana Varga made 16 digs and 28 assists.

LOWELLVILLE -- Megan Whitmer scored 14 points with four aces and made 39 assists for the Bluejays (10-8, 8-3) in the Inter-County League match.
Alyssa Chine added 18 points and six kills while Allison Chepke had nine points and 16 kills.
Rebekah Sturgill paced the Rockets (3-14, 0-9) scored nine points, three assists and two kills. Jacque Schrader had seven points and nine kills.
