Canfield's McGowan, Lesnett earn state bid

ROCKY RIVER -- Division I defending state doubles champions Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett of Canfield High School are assured of returning to state this year.
The Cardinals' duo earned their berth as they defeated Brenna Hart-Jackie Bove of Avon Lake 6-1, 6-1 and Mandy Barto-Pam Quigney of Mentor 6-0, 6-0 in district competition Wednesday at Tri-City Park.
Jillian Nard and Lauren Sulick of Canfield were eliminated by Mary Kate Lockhart-Katie Mathews of Magnificat 6-2, 6-4 in a first round match.
In singles, the Cardinals' Christina Brant was eliminated by Courtney Giomarac of Hudson 6-0, 6-1.
Semifinal and championship matches are scheduled at Tri-City Park courts Saturday.
