YOUNGSTOWN -- A 56-year-old Parkview Avenue man was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a stab wound around 6 a.m. Tuesday. He told hospital police that he had been stabbed in the 800 block of Fifth Avenue and gave them the first name of a woman he says did it. He handed over a paring knife that he carries for protection. It was not the knife used in the attack, reports show.
Pizza shop robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- An employee at a South Avenue pizza shop reported a robbery at gunpoint Tuesday morning.
The employee said that a man in his 20s came into Angelo's Pizza about 9:30 a.m. requesting change. He left when the woman told him that she didn't have any. He returned a few minutes later with another man in his 20s.
This time, the employee told the men that the business was closed. They left, and one of them returned shortly and pointed a handgun at her, telling her to open the register. As she was opening the cash drawer, the second man came into the shop with a shotgun. They fled in a green car after emptying the register and ripping the phone from the wall.
Drug possession charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Garnet E. Smith, found sitting on an exercise bike at abandoned property in the 3000 block of Nelson Avenue, was charged with possession of drugs. Police said Smith, 23, of Mabel Street, could not tell them who owned the property or why he was hanging out there. Officers were in the area Monday in response to complaints about drug activity. Smith had 16 rocks of suspected crack cocaine on him, reports show. He was arraigned Tuesday in municipal court. Bond was set at $5,000, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
Open house for center
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city will host an open house Oct. 22 for the public to view its more-than-$45 million convocation center. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. with the facility open to the public for guided tours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will be entertainment for those attending. The facility officially opens Oct. 29 with a Three Doors Down concert.
Boy has counterfeit bills
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old boy with counterfeit money at Chaney High School on Monday told police that he got it last week from an unidentified teenage boy who had a large amount of counterfeit money that he was flashing around. The Chaney boy said he brought one $50 and three $20s to school and threw away two of the $20s. The $50 and remaining $20 were taken by police and placed in the vice squad evidence locker.
Crimes at 2 schools
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone broke a classroom window at Volney Rogers Junior High School, put newspapers in the hole and then set the papers on fire, police said. The damage was discovered Monday by a custodian. The fire caused paint on blinds to burn. The blinds and broken glass were saved for an arson investigator.
Also on Monday at Woodrow Wilson High School, a custodian discovered that that the window of the main office door had been punched out and the lost-and-found drawer ransacked. The custodian wasn't able to determine if anything had been taken.
126 wool throws taken
YOUNGSTOWN -- Acrylic-wool throws -- 126 of them, worth $1,260 -- were taken from a trailer backed up to a loading dock at Brentwood Originals on North Meridian Road, police said. The theft was discovered Tuesday morning. An investigation revealed a side door on the trailer was left unlocked.
Fall cleanup at cemetery
