Police investigate submerged truck in Mahoning River
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men who set out on their first canoeing trip on the Mahoning River found more than they bargained for.
Gabriel Crish and Chris Rutushin, both of Youngstown, discovered the roof of a Dodge Dakota pickup truck in the water behind the Cantar Corp., 1100 Performance Place, on Youngstown's South Side.
Crish and Rutushin said they started their trip at about 3 p.m. near a dam close to Mill Creek Park. After more than an hour, Crish and Rutushin said, they noticed tires farther upstream before seeing the purple roof of the submerged vehicle, they said.
"It looked like a rock at first," Rutushin said, adding that they were unable to see a license plate or other identifying information.
Crish called police on his cellular phone at about 4:30 p.m., he said.
A few hours later, members of the Youngstown Police and Fire departments were still on the scene, and Bob O's Towing of Youngstown was attempting to pull the vehicle from the river. No other information about the truck was available late Tuesday.
