HUBBARD ROBBERY Suspect is parolee, records show
Lots of cash fell out of the suspect's pants, police said.
HUBBARD -- A Youngstown man suspected of robbing the Sky Bank branch here served time for robbery and voluntary manslaughter and was placed on parole two years ago, records show.
Hubbard interim police Chief Ken Oyler said the suspect, 43-year-old Howard Ahart, was captured Tuesday afternoon in woods between Nelson Avenue and Choice Court on Youngstown's East Side.
The chief said officers from Youngstown and Hubbard city and township aided in the search, and Ahart was spotted within 20 minutes.
Oyler said that Ahart would be charged with aggravated robbery if had a weapon. There was a mention of a knife, but witnesses would need to be questioned to verify that, he said.
Criminal history
Oyler said Ahart has an extensive criminal history. Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction records show Ahart was in prison from Aug. 24, 2001 through Sept. 23, 2003.
The chief said the suspect handed a note to a bank teller demanding money around 12:40 p.m. It wasn't immediately known how much was taken. The bank is located at 11 S. Main St.
Police said that during his flight, Ahart turned the gray Oldsmobile Calais he was driving onto Choice Court and jumped out of the car and it crashed into a Buick Regal parked in the driveway at 3750 Choice, police said. Ahart then jumped a fence and ran into the woods, police said.
Police said about $1,500 fell from Ahart's pants leg when he was captured -- even though he told officers that he had tossed the money into the woods.
Once in custody, Ahart complained of breathing problems, and an ambulance was summoned. Oyler said Ahart would be booked into the Trumbull County Jail once he's released from Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
